Long Island: Beautiful Places and Quiet Spaces at Cold Spring Harbor Library

| 05 September, 2016 10:10

"Orient Point Summer", Watercolor, 8" x 10" Nancy Wernersbach©2016

Now on exhibit and for sale at the Cold Spring Harbor Library are my paintings of the many beautiful locations on my home of Long Island, NY. Though it may seem like this area so close to NYC is nothing but endless traffic and shopping malls you have only to take one step off the beaten track to find beautiful preserved mansions and their gardens, vast state parks with majestic trees, and of course the beaches! The East End, home to the Hamptons and North Fork wineries, is a whole different world of charming small towns and a slower pace of life.

Come and enjoy some of these places through my paintings! All are invited to the Reception on Sat., Sept. 10th from 2 to 4pm. The show is on exhibit through Oct. 30th. Cold Spring Harbor Library, 95 Harbor Rd. (25A), Cold Spring Harbor, 11724.

Heading north on 25A towards the village of Cold Spring Harbor you will see the Harbor Mist Restaurant on your right. Next is a white sign for the Library. Turn right and follow driveway up to the Library. My exhibit in on the lower level.

Best Wishes!

Article and Cover of Summertime Anton Publications special issue!

| 29 August, 2016 11:24

Glad to have my painting "Beach Cottage Summer" ( a cropped portion of it actually) chosen for the special "Summertime" issue for the Anton Papers (village newspapers across Nassau County, Long Island). The full size image is one of my illustrations available as a jigsaw puzzle from SunsOut. It expresses the best of summer here on Long Island, New York--there really is no need to go on vacation here in the summer: we have the best beaches, scenie villages on the East End and Hamptons, wineries and plenty of shopping! Thanks to Alex Nunez of the Anton Press who saw my work at a show with the Westbury Arts Council and asked to see my artwork. The image is also available as fine art prints--please contact me for pricing and sizes.

Best Wishes!

Art League of Nassau County Spring 2016 Membership Exhibition

| 12 March, 2016 11:16

Snow Shadows, Planting Fields Arboretum, Watercolor, 14" x 20", Nancy Wernersbach ©2016

I was very pleased to receive an Award of Excellence for this painting from judge and artist Robert Carter at the Art League of Nassau County Spring Membership Exhibition on through April 21st at the Locust Valley Library, Locust Valley NY. Art league membership is a wonderful way to make new friends with your passion for the arts and to exhibit your work. To me paintings are to be shared with the world and they do no good sitting in a closet at home! For more information about the ALNC, please see the League's website: www.artleagueofnc.org.

Best Wishes,

Pet Portraits

| 14 January, 2016 12:22

"Kodi", Watercolor, 10" x 8" "Freddy", Watercolor, 10" x 8"

Nancy Wernersbach©2015

Pet portraits make great gifts and are fun to paint. Good reference photos are a must! The eyes are everything and you need to pay attention to the little differences in fur and coat color pattern and expression that give each beloved pet their own personality.

Best Wishes!

New Commissioned Paintings

| 14 January, 2016 12:11

"Roslyn Village, 1959" Watercolor, 22" x 28" ©2015 "St. Mary's Church, Roslyn", Watercolor, 24" x 18"©2015

Commisions can be challenging and wonderful adventures in painting. My client asked me to paint the iconic clock tower and movie theatre of the picturesque village of Roslyn here on Long Island, NY. But here's the tricky part (as if all the architecture was not challenging enough!) I had to add in his parents' car and the movie they saw when they met "Some Like it Hot" to the movie theatre marquee. Fortunately he had photos of the car which helped. And thankfully when I went to take pictures it was a beautiful fall afternoon with great shadows, light and color in the foliage. It makes painting so much easier when you have the right reference material. It was a success and hopefully will be a cherished part of my client's home for many years to come.

Best wishes and happy painting!

Working with Water-Soluble Oils

| 03 September, 2014 15:35

I'm reposting this article as people often ask me about the water-soluble oils that I use. I can't take the fumes from turp or even the odorless solvents (they still evaporate into the air and give me a migraine & sore throat)
Here's some notes on the water-soluble oils:

I don't like the cheaper Winsor Newton Artisan or Grumbacher Max they are too sticky in my opinion and frustrating to get to flow nicely.

I use Holbein Duo Aqua Oils & Daniel Smith water-soluble oils. Daniel Smith are the most like regular oil paint, so I'm gradually switching over to them from the Holbein. I use Daniel Smith watercolor too--I just think their paint is the best.

The linseed oil medium made for the paints is very helpful in getting them to flow better.

Don't use water like a watercolor painting. I just dip the brush to moisten it, then blot off excess. I keep a container of water with Dawn dishwashing liquid in it to clean the brush while painting & a container of clear water for cleaning & moistening brush.

It's advisable to use synthetic brushes only as the water can damage bristle brushes--use synthetics made for oil as they are stiffer than acrylic or watercolor brushes. I use Princeton #6300FB (brown handle) or Liquitex (light green handle) The "Artist's Loft" green handled brushes at Michael's are surprisingly good also.

Here's my basic palette/ colors are available in either brand unless noted:
Ultramarine Blue
Cad. yellow light or Hansa Yellow (Daniel Smith)
Cad. red medium
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna
Sap Green
Viridian
Alizarin Crimson
Horizon Blue (A beautiful turquoise color--Holbein)
Titanium White

Also have:
Cerulean Blue
Dioxazine Violet (Holbein)
Quinacridone purple (Daniel Smith)
Quinacridone gold
Quinacridone red (Daniel Smith)
Jaune Brillant (Holbein peach color)
Rose Violet (Holbein)
Yellow Green (Holbein)

Clean up brushes after painting with soap and water.

A Mastersons palette with the snap on lid will keep extra paint moist & workable for an extra day or two. I put a small wet sponge inside.

They take a few days to dry depending on the weather--a bit faster than regular oils. White takes longer to dry.

For good paintings I use panels from Ray-Mar (look online) I love their smoother surface panels--you have to order 10 at a time.

Good luck & Happy Painting!

Watercolor & Collage

| 17 August, 2014 13:09

"Memories of the Sea", Nancy Wernersbach©2014, 11" x 20", watercolor & collage paper

I do enjoy collage with watercolor--it's a great way to take your frustrations out on a failed painting and rescue the good parts! I painted a new background for these shells and added bits and pieces of other painted papers for the sea shapes then added collage papers for the seaweed effects.

Happy Painting!
