I'll be doing an orchid painting demo at the Long Island Orchid Society 3rd Annual Orchid Festival at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, NY. The Festival runs from Friday to Sunday, May 29th--31st, 9am to 5pm each day.  The demo will be on Sunday afternoon and there will be a free raffle, so come on down and take a chance you could win one of my paintings!

The Orchid Festival features vendors from around the country and even South American selling amazing orchids--not the stuff you see in Home Depot! The LIOS also has beautiful orchid displays and lectures to help you successfully grow your new orchid. This year we will also have an Art Show featuring paintings and photography of Orchids, Flowers and Gardens.

Working with Water-Soluble Oils

| 03 September, 2014 15:35

I'm reposting this article as people often ask me about the water-soluble oils that I use. I can't take the fumes from turp or even the odorless solvents (they still evaporate into the air and give me a migraine & sore throat)
Here's some notes on the water-soluble oils:

I don't like the cheaper Winsor Newton Artisan or Grumbacher Max they are too sticky in my opinion and frustrating to get to flow nicely.

I use Holbein Duo Aqua Oils & Daniel Smith water-soluble oils. Daniel Smith are the most like regular oil paint, so I'm gradually switching over to them from the Holbein. I use Daniel Smith watercolor too--I just think their paint is the best.

The linseed oil medium made for the paints is very helpful in getting them to flow better.

Don't use water like a watercolor painting. I just dip the brush to moisten it, then blot off excess. I keep a container of water with Dawn dishwashing liquid in it to clean the brush while painting & a container of clear water for cleaning & moistening brush.

It's advisable to use synthetic brushes only as the water can damage bristle brushes--use synthetics made for oil as they are stiffer than acrylic or watercolor brushes. I use Princeton #6300FB (brown handle) or Liquitex (light green handle) The "Artist's Loft" green handled brushes at Michael's are surprisingly good also.

Here's my basic palette/ colors are available in either brand unless noted:
Ultramarine Blue
Cad. yellow light or Hansa Yellow (Daniel Smith)
Cad. red medium
Yellow Ochre
Burnt Sienna
Sap Green
Viridian
Alizarin Crimson
Horizon Blue (A beautiful turquoise color--Holbein)
Titanium White

Also have:
Cerulean Blue
Dioxazine Violet (Holbein)
Quinacridone purple (Daniel Smith)
Quinacridone gold
Quinacridone red (Daniel Smith)
Jaune Brillant (Holbein peach color)
Rose Violet (Holbein)
Yellow Green (Holbein)

Clean up brushes after painting with soap and water.

A Mastersons palette with the snap on lid will keep extra paint moist & workable for an extra day or two. I put a small wet sponge inside.

They take a few days to dry depending on the weather--a bit faster than regular oils. White takes longer to dry.

For good paintings I use panels from Ray-Mar (look online) I love their smoother surface panels--you have to order 10 at a time.

Good luck & Happy Painting!

Watercolor & Collage

| 17 August, 2014 13:09

"Memories of the Sea", Nancy Wernersbach©2014, 11" x 20", watercolor & collage paper

I do enjoy collage with watercolor--it's a great way to take your frustrations out on a failed painting and rescue the good parts! I painted a new background for these shells and added bits and pieces of other painted papers for the sea shapes then added collage papers for the seaweed effects.

Happy Painting!

Watercolor painting rescue!

| 16 March, 2014 14:07

"Rushing Wave", 10" x 8", watercolor, Nancy Wernersbach©2014

This little painting was part of a full sheet watercolor painting that just wasn't going well--It was too streaky, lost my lights, got muddy, but this one part was nice so I got out the sissors and rescued it--that's one way of making lemonade out of paintings that are lemons!

Happy Painting!

Tip for Making a Collage

| 11 February, 2014 09:56

"Chambered Nautilus: Inner Spiral" Nancy Wernersbach©2014, Watercolor & collage papers.

When I am deciding on the design for a collage painting I move the different shapes around in many ways to get the best design.  I've found that taking a quick photo of the design before gluing it down is a big help.  When I take it apart to glue the pieces I always loose the look, so I can use the photo as my guide to get the same result.

Happy Painting!

House Portraits

| 09 January, 2014 16:29

A great idea for a meaningful family gift is a portrait of the family home.  I did this one as a commission for two daughters to give their mother as she was selling the family home. Though the photos the family gave me were winter scenes, google had a picture of the house in the summer so I was able to paint the green foliage properly and I added flowers to the pots and flowerboxes for a pop of color.  A north facing house is tough to photograph and paint as the front is never in sunlight, so I had to use a noontime shot and brighten it up a bit.

A painting can be a personal and meaningful gift!
